Two Dissertations

I just reviewed two books for their publisher, seemingly based on dissertations, whose authors never learned concision.  These are 60 page chapters that should be 30 at most.  They just go on and on with no idea about how to make a point without endless belaboring, repetition, and stiff, verbose prose. My next student is going to write more chapters, but without this kind of useless, mind-numbing padding. When did the law get written that dissertation had to have 3 chapters, but each one very, very long?
